Undergraduate Awards

All applications must be submitted in triplicate (3 copies) and  will require a Women's Studies award  cover sheet (click cover sheet to download) and:

  • Curriculum Vitae - maximum 2 pages (CV should include: name, all contact information, education, honors and awards, scholarships, university service, community service, memberships, employment)
  • Transcript or current Degree Progress Report
  • Letter of Recommendation from UCLA faculty

HONORS RESEARCH AWARD-- DUE DECEMBER 3, 2008 at 12:00 NOON
A $2,000 research award for an upper division Women’s Studies major who is eligible for and plans to pursue honors in the major in Winter/Spring 2009.  [minimum GPA in Women’s Studies of 3.4 and cumulative GPA of 3.0].  Application should also include:

  • Research proposal for honors thesis -- maximum 4 pages, single-spaced, outlining project and its contribution to the field of Women’s Studies and the Women's Studies Department Honors application.  Faculty recommendation  letter must be from project sponsor or co-sponsor.
 

ESTRIN FAMILY WOMEN IN SCIENCE AWARD-- DUE  DECEMBER 3, 2008, at 12:00 noon for Fall 2008 quarter.  Deadlines for  Winter or Spring quarters: TBA
A $2,000 award for an upper division physical science or engineering major who has taken at least one course in WS and has declared or intends to declare a minor or double major in Women’s Studies.  Application should also include:

  • Essay -- maximum 3 pages, single-spaced.  (Essay should address your career plans in relation to the physical sciences and the impact that Women’s Studies has had on you and on your particular discipline.)

Please note- Award recipient will be announced during Spring quarter. As per University policy, students must be enrolled in courses Spring quarter to be eligible for award payment.

INDEPENDENT RESEARCH AWARD-- DUE DECEMBER 3, 2008 at 12:00 NOON
A $1,000 research award for an upper division Women’s Studies major or minor who is eligible for WS-199 and wants to pursue an independent research project in Winter  2009. (Due date for Spring 2009 is March 4, 2009.)  Application should also include:

  • Essay -- maximum 3 pages, single-spaced, outlining project and its contribution to the field of Women’s Studies.  Faculty letter must be from project sponsor.

 

WOMEN’S STUDIES ACHIEVEMENT AWARD -- DUE DECEMBER 3, 2008 at 12:00 NOON

A $1,500 award for a Women’s Studies major or minor, recognizing outstanding achievements in academic work, personal development, and community participation.  Application should also include:
  • Essay -- maximum 3 pages, single-spaced.  (Essay should detail the impact that Women’s Studies has had on you, what you have accomplished academically, personally, and in the community, e.g., participation in feminist organizations or political projects.  How has your intellectual development affected your life choices?)

Please note- Award recipient will be announced during Spring quarter. As per University policy, students must be enrolled in courses Spring quarter to be eligible for award payment.

COINER UNDERGRADUATE PRIZE
Two $750 awards for upper division students [GPA 3.0 or higher] who demonstrate an active commitment to both working class and feminist issues and involvement in community activities for social change.  All application materials are due by 12 NOON on March 7, 2008. In addition to the cover sheet, the application should also include:

  • The Constance Coiner Undergraduate application form
  • A three-page essay (see application form)
  • Two letters of recommendations: one for academic work and one for community work.


ELIZABETH BLACKWELL MD AWARD
A $1000 award made possible through the generosity of Penny Kanner, Ph.D.

Criteria: For a publishable research report, thesis, dissertation or published article by a UCLA graduate or undergraduate student relating to women’s health or women in health-related sciences. (Examples include, but are not limited to: medicine, biological and other sciences, public health, sociology of medicine, history of science, medical education, health policy). Multi-authored articles will be considered, so long as the applicant has made a significant contribution to the research.

Application: Qualified students should submit a copy of the paper or article, a current CV and two letters of recommendation from faculty members, along with the application cover sheet and a current transcript (student copy is acceptable).  ALL IN TRIPLICATE. Applications due by 12 NOON on March 31, 2008.

 

RENAISSANCE AWARD
A $1000 undergraduate scholarship, made possible through the generous donation of Dr. Myrna Hant, rewards the rebirth of academic aspirations among women whose college careers were interrupted or delayed by family and/or career obligations and encourages achievement in the pursuit of a bachelor's degree at UCLA.

The student must be a UCLA undergraduate woman who returned or is returning to college after a period of years. Students transferring from community college to UCLA as juniors and continuing UCLA undergraduates are eligible to apply. Student must be eligible for financial aid or student loans.

Applications are due by 12 NOON  on February 15, 2008  and should include:

  • cover sheet
  • current CV
  • an essay describing your path to a college degree, what you have accomplished academically, personally, and in the community, and what earning a BA/BS from UCLA means to you
  • transcripts for all college level work
  • two letters of recommendations: one for academic work and one for community involvement or a personal reference
