Dissertation Research
My research explores the gendered and racialized cultural productions of "biological threats" such as anthrax, smallpox, SARS and flu. A recently emerging conception of microbes as a particular type of national security threat, "biological threats" have been accompanied by scares in the post-9/11 U.S. climate. I focus on these scares as a lens into the bio-political mechanisms by which the U.S. State shapes notions of gender, race and nation. By examining the politics and media surrounding these scares, I analyze the role that biological threat discourse plays in post-9/11 U.S. Empire and nationhood.
