Femme-on-Femme: Reflections on collaborative methods and queer femme-inist ethnography
Thursday, November 12th
4-6pm
2125 Rolfe Hall
Co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Women
Abstract:
Based in femme-on-femme research, this paper reflects on the queer dimensions of conducting ethnographic work with/in “ones own community” and on the possibility of queering ethnographic writing. Focusing conversation and representation, I argue that collaboration with research subjects queers research conventions and contributes to a reconsideration of what counts as theory, and that this is particularly useful with regards to considering the topic of femininity and its place within queer feminism. Here I first discuss two queer feminist ethnographic models for conducting research within sub-cultural communities to which one belongs that have been useful to my own practice and then address how ideas about home/community/distance continue to structure social scientific (and ethnographic) knowledge production. The central piece of the talk is a retrospective reflection on the joys and dilemmas of the collaborative work I did with photographer Del LaGrace Volcano and the subjects of our book Femmes of Power: Exploding Queer Femininities (Volcano & Dahl 2008). Aside from considering writing conventions, I scrutinize the dichotomy between the theorizing academic and her “informants”, ultimately and hopefully, proposing that femme-inist ethnography highlights citation, collaboration and co-production of ideas in ways that contribute to a “femme science” (Duggan and McHugh 1996/2002).
